General Best Practices - Windows - Adware/Spyware/PUPs

This section is primarily focused on Adware, Spyware, and PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).  While the tools discussed in this and other sections will often remove more invasive threats, the general process is more involved for Malware not classified as Adware/Spyware/PUPs (root/boot kits, trojans, botnets, viruses).

If you only run one piece of software, MalwareBytes AntiMalware is currently the gold standard for Adware/Spyware/PUP removal.  However, it is highly recommended that multiple different pieces of anti-malware software be used when removing malware as each has different strengths and weaknesses.

If Adware, Spyware, or PUPs are detected or suspected on a particular system, please utilize the following series of software/instructions to clear the infection:
